Welcome to the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). Here is a list of all the FAQs, clicking on them will take you directly to the answer, you can also simply scroll down the list.
Assuming that you already have a computer with an active internet connection, lets us talk telnet applications, one of which is needed in order to connect to Shadowdale MUD. In Windows 95 & 98 there is already a standard telnet application installed. To run it simply click the start icon and chose "Run" from the menu. You are now prompted to type in the name of the program you wish to launch, simply type Telnet and the program will start. Telnet is a very lousy program to use though, and I recommend using ZMUD or AvPlay. Avplay is freeware and will not cost you a dime. ZMUD on the other hand only offers a free trial period, after which you are supposed to buy the program license. ZMUD is by many considered the very best MUD application. Once you figure out which application suits you the best all you have to do is connect to the address play.sdmud.org at port number 7777.

How can I communicate/group with other players?
There are a number of forms of communication available in the Shadowdale Realm. These include: tell, group tell, say, whisper, sign language, gossip, auction, and shout.
Tell: Use this to privately
tell another player something. They must be in your
zone. Other players have no way of detecting that you are talking to
anyone.
group tell: Use this to privately talk to members in your group.
say: When using SAY you
speak out loud in a language that you choose, via
SPEAK. If the other player does not know the language you are speaking,
you will NOT be able to communicate with say. All players in the room will
see the text following a say. You can also use ' as an abbreviation for
say.
whisper: This
privately conveys the text to the person. They must be in the room,
and everyone else in the room can tell you are whispering, but not what.
gossip: This is a
form of communication that is heard by all players in the same
zone as you and who have the gossip channel turned on. If you want to just
gab, this is the channel use. Use WHOZONE to see who is in gossip range.
auction: This is a form of
communication that is heard by all players in the same
zone as you and who have the channel turned on. If you want to sell
something this is the channel to use.
shout: Shout is a
form of communication that will project your voice across the
world. Since you are projecting your voice over such a large distance it
takes 10 moves and 10 mana points to shout. You cannot shout until you are
level 2.

Where can I get food and water?
This is dependant upon in which town you reside. In general, there is usually a restaurant or bar near the Receptionist or Innkeeper in each town. You can also often find fountains around where you can get some fresh water to drink or fill your barrel or waterskin. Some classes can learn the skills find food and water. Mortals are allowed to pray to an Immortal once a day for limited assistance. The guidelines for prayers are very strict and must be followed exactly in order for the Immortal to be able to answer it. Guidelines can be found witin the game by typing: help pray. The general format is: pray [Immortal's Name] [prayer]. The immortal is by no mean obligated to grant the prayer.

Each character starts with limited equipment, but there is plenty more to be found on the mobiles you encounter (mobiles or mobs or non-player characters in the game). Nearly every town has a specified area that serves as a Donation Area. In this area, players are encouraged, and do, drop the extra equipment that they obtain so that other players may use it. Items left in a Donation Room are free to anyone that needs them, but please try not to take more than you need because there are others out there that may need the equipment as well.
